The Mayors’ Council welcomes the Liberal Party’s commitment to a permanent transit fund as outlined in their platform released this weekend. In partnership with the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, our #CureCongestion campaign has been calling for permanent funding as the smartest, most cost-effective way to plan for future expansion of public transit services in our communities. Three of the four major parties – the Liberals, NDP and Green Party – have committed in this election to introduce new or permanent funding mechanisms that would allow TransLink to move ahead with rapid transit projects, complete the 10-Year Vision, and accelerate plans to electrify our bus fleet.
We’ve seen historic increases in transit service in Metro Vancouver over the past few years – thanks to strong partnerships with the provincial and federal governments – and yet we can’t keep up with growing demand from the public. Building more transit is one of the most powerful things we can do to reduce congestion, lower GHG emissions, strengthen our economy and improve our quality of life. We hope to see all the major parties affirm their commitment to transit with permanent funding.
You can help by talking to your local candidates about transit, and watch for the Cure Congestion Voters’ Guide – coming soon.
